How to Care for Gold-Plated Jewelry So It Keeps Its Shine

Gold-plated jewelry does not tarnish because it is cheap — it tarnishes because of what we put on it. Follow these six habits and your pieces stay bright far longer.

1. Last on, first off

Put your jewelry on after perfume, moisturiser and hairspray, and take it off before you take off your clothes. Alcohol and oils are the main enemies of the plating.

2. Keep it out of water

Remove pieces before showering, swimming and washing up. Chlorine and salt water strip plating fastest of all.

3. Wipe after wearing

Ten seconds with a soft dry cloth removes the sweat and oils that eat away at the finish overnight.

4. Store pieces separately

Chains scratch each other. A small pouch or a compartment box per item prevents micro-scratches that look like dullness.

5. Never use silver polish

Polishing cloths and dips are abrasive and will remove the gold layer. Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth is all you need.

6. Rest your favourites

Rotating between two or three pieces roughly doubles their lifespan. Start a small rotation with our gold bracelets.
